How to Find the Best Colored Dress for Your Skin Tone

Posted by Claire Erickson on

Figuring out what color best flatters your skin tone can be difficult, especially since the colors can be grouped into three categories: warm, cool, and neutral.

How did I learn this you might ask? It was a topic discussed at the London College of Fashion when I attended, so trust me, I know what I'm talking about!

Kat Collings of Who What Wear said it perfectly when it comes to picking out the perfect color for whatever the shade of your skin may be: "We wanted to cut through the nonsense and nail down the specific colors that will flatter everyone, so we broke things down by five general skin tones to make things as simple as possible." Enough with the warm, cools, and neutrals-- let's focus on you!

1. Conquer the Day Dress

If you have deep, dark skin, then sapphire blue will look absolutely radiant against your natural pigmentation! This Conquer the Day Dress is especially flattering, because the velvet fabric makes the color more of an elegant jewel tone.

Some black satin heels will tie anything in with this dress! Maybe even try it with a black envelope clutch.

COLORS: Pink, Dark Green, Wine Red, Sapphire, Black

2. Sexy Shoulder Dress

If you are a few shades lighter than a deep, dark hue, then olive green is your choice. The great thing about this color is that it is essentially neutral, since it is one of the most common colors in nature. Because this color is earthy, you can pair it with whatever your other favorite colors may be!

If you want a more rebellious style, we suggest adding a tousled ponytail like Serena Van der Woodsen's and some black combat boots!

COLORS: Black, Burgundy, Green, Red

3. Go With the Flow Dress

Is your skin medium toned? Then, charcoal grey is the best thing for you. It will do wonders! This dress is a lovely deep color for fall and winter, plus it is also a neutral, so it can be paired with most anything.

If you are wearing this dress in the winter, we suggest a big fluffy cardigan to cozy up in. If you are planning to wear this in the summer, then as is, is perfect!

COLORS: Grey, Blue, Green, Black

4. Ready to Rock Dress

Are all you light-skin ladies ready to rock this dress? This pastel blue has just enough color to pop against pale skin. We suggest wearing this dress on your next night out, because it is super sexy!

Want to be even more bold? Add a red lip and get a blow out!

COLORS: Blue, Orange

5. Shoulder Hug Dress

Last, but not least-- we can't forget you fair skin ladies. We know, we don't want to make you look more pale, so we suggest this lavender Shoulder Hug Dress. The color will make you look more dainty, and lady-like than ever!

Want to make a statement? Add a trench coat and some beige heels!

COLORS: Purple, Black, Green, Pink

Don't think these colors work for you? We have more suggestions, so be sure to message us and we can help you figure out what works for you!
